Windom-Mt. Lake will have one wrestler move on to the Class A State Tournament, following Saturday’s Section 2A/3A Super Regional Individual Tournament, held in Windom.
Cobra senior Kade Sammons advanced to state as the super regional champion at 138 pounds. Sammons opened Saturday with a 14-0 major decision win, then recorded a fall in 2:08 in the semifinals. Sammons then won a 15-0 technical fall over Tucker Wills of Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial to win the 138-pound title.
One other Cobra ended up earning a medal from Saturday’s competition. Junior Caden Swoboda opened the day with a fall, then lost a 7-0 decision in the semifinals. Swoboda rebounded with a 7-0 victory in the wrestlebacks, but was pinned in 3:44 by Ethan Elvebak of United South Central in the third-place match, finishing fourth in the tournament.
WML’s other qualifier for Saturday’s action, senior Trenton Renquist, opened the day losing a fall in the first round. He bounced back with a 14-8 victory in the wrestlebacks, but was eliminated with a 5-2 loss to Coltan Bents of Jackson County Central.
Sammons advances as one of eight individual wrestlers at 138 pounds. This year’s Class A State Tournament will be held March 27 at St. Michael-Albertville High School.
Falcons knocked out of super regionals
Red Rock Central will not have any wrestlers advancing to the Class A State Tournament, after RRC’s four super regional qualifiers were each eliminated Saturday in Windom.
At 106 pounds, Evan Bartholomaus lost a 15-3 major decision in the opening round and was pinned in 3:32 by Tate Miller of Kenyon-Wanamingo to end his tournament.
At 152 pounds, Damon Holmen lost a first-round fall, then lost a 9-0 major decision to Konner Harpestad of United South Central.
At 170 pounds, Vander Mathiowetz won a 7-2 decision in the opening round, then lost a 6-4 decision in the semifinals. He was pinned by Kadin Johnson of Springfield in 3:49 to end his tournament.
At 285 pounds, Cory Anderson lost a 7-3 decision, then lost a 12-5 decision to Gavin Hermes of Medford.
