The Windom Area boys hockey team’s offense couldn’t break through Thursday night and Willmar used two second-period goals and a late empty-netter to knock the Eagles out of the Section 3A Tournament 3-0 at Windom.
The Eagles generated chances, hitting the goalpost with two shot attempts in the first period. The Eagles also couldn’t capitalize on four power play chances, including three in the third period.
Willmar broke the scoreless tie 7:02 into the second period and took a 2-0 lead into the final 17 minutes.
The Cardinals successfully killed off three Eagle power plays. And, with 33 seconds left on the clock, sealed the game with an empty net goal.
Willmar outshot the Eagles 24-20 in the game. Goalie Dan Stubbe finished with 21 saves in the loss.
