Three Cobras advance

Three Windom-Mt. Lake wrestlers remained alive for possible state meet berths following the opening rounds of the Section 3A Individual Tournament Tuesday in Wabasso.

Each weight class wrestled down to championship and third-place matches. The four remaining wrestlers in each weight class advance to Saturday’s Section 2A/3A Individual Super Regional in Windom, where the remaining wrestlers will be placed into a bracket with wrestlers from Section 2A. Two wrestlers from each weight class from the combined sections will advance to the state tournament from Saturday’s super regional.

WML had one wrestler advance to the section finals. Kade Sammons opened the 138-pound bracket with a technical fall, then moved to the finals with a 13-1 major decision win over Breyer Hieronimus of Adrian-Ellsworth.

At 132 pounds, Caden Swoboda opened the tourney with a decision win, but lost by technical fall in the semifinals. Swoboda then won a 9-1 major decision over Davis Budden of Pipestone to advance to the third-place match.

At 145 pounds, Trenton Renquist opened the tournament with a decision win, then was defeated 6-4 in overtime in the semifinals. Renquist rebounded by pinning Gabe Martin of Wabasso in 1:17 to advance to the third-place match.

Other Cobra results from Tuesday included:

106: Jared Hunter opened with a fall, then lost by technical fall and lost a 12-11 decision in the consolation bracket.

113: Aiden Holmberg lost by fall in the pigtail round and was eliminated from the tournament.

120: Tucker Renquist opened the tournament with a fall, but was pinned in the quarterfinals. Renquist then won a technical fall, but was pinned in the consolation semifinals, ending his tournament.

126: Noah Holmberg opened the tournament with a fall, but lost by fall in the quarterfinals and in the consolation bracket.

152: Montgomery Bjorklund lost by fall in the quarterfinals, then won by fall before being pinned in the consolation semifinals, ending his tournament.

160: Graysen Hansen was pinned in the pigtail round and was eliminated from the tournament.

170: Matthew Ekstrom was pinned in the pigtail round and was eliminated from the tournament.

182: Micah Holmberg won by fall in the quarterfinals, then lost a 9-5 decision in the semifinals. In the consolation bracket, Holmberg dropped an 8-3 decision, ending his tournament.

220: Alex Altman won by fall in the quarterfinals, then lost a 5-1 decision in the semifinals. He was eliminated with a 7-4 decision loss in the consolation semifinals.

285: Cyrus Bjorklund was pinned in the pigtail round and eliminated from the tournament.

Four Falcons advance

Three Red Rock Central wrestlers remained alive for possible state meet berths following the opening rounds of the Section 3A Individual Tournament Tuesday in Wabasso.

RRC had one wrestler advance to the section finals. At 170 pounds, Vander Mathiowetz won a fall in the first round in 1:36, then pinned Kadin Johnson of Springfield in 1:25 to advance to the finals.

At 106, Evan Bartholomaus lost a quarterfinal decision 6-4, but rebounded with a 12-11 victory and a 16-14 decision over Linkoln Carlson of Tracy-Milroy-Balaton/Westbrook-Walnut Grove to advance to the third-place match.

At 152, Damon Holmen won a 12-7 decision to open the tournament, then lost by fall in 1:23. Holmen won by fall in 1:54 over Montgomery Bjorklund of Windom-Mt. Lake to advance to the third-place match.

At 285, Cory Anderson opened with a fall in 5:26. Anderson was pinned in 1:37 in the semifinals. He then pinned Shane Clemon of Springfield in 2:21 to advance to the third-place match.

Other Falcon results from Tuesday included:

113: Bowen Hesse lost by fall in the pigtail round and was eliminated from the tournament.

120: Aubrey Mathiowetz lost by fall in the pigtail round and was eliminated from the tournament.

126: Zak Zimmerman won by fall in the pigtail round before taking a 15-3 major decision loss in the quarterfinals. In the wrestlebacks, Zimmerman won by fall in 1:24, then was pinned in 2:23 to end his tournament.

132: Carter Beranek opened with a fall in the pigtail round. He was pinned in the quarterfinals, then lost by fall in the wrestlebacks to end his tournament.

138: Andrew Pankonin was pinned in the pigtail round and eliminated from the tournament.

160: Payton Harazin lost by fall in the pigtail round and was eliminated from the tournament.

182: Damian Osland won by fall in the pigtail round, then lost by fall in the quarterfinals. Osland won a 3-1 overtime decision in the wrestlebacks, but was eliminated with a 5-4 loss.

195: Austin Cowan won by fall in the pigtail round, but lost by fall in the quarterfinals and the wrestlebacks.

220: Gavin Hesse lost by fall in the quarterfinals, then won by fall in the wrestlebacks before losing by fall to end his tournament.
