Eagle girls skate past Trojans in playoffs

Windom Area 1-0-2 = 3
Worthington 0-0-1 = 1

The Windom Area girls hockey team put together a full-team defensive effort Monday night in Worthington.

Backup goalie Bethany Schmidt turned aside all but one shot on goal, including a handful of crucial saves in the third period.

On offense, Presley Dockter scored a pair of third period goals, propelling the Eagles to a 3-1 victory in the Section 3A playoffs.

The win was the first playoff victory for the Eagles since the 2008-09 season.

The Eagles netted the first goal of the game, as Marissa Becker scooped the puck out of a scrum in front of the net and found the twine for a 1-0 lead in the first period.

It stayed that way until early in the third period, when Dockter cleaned up a rebound for a 2-0 lead.

Worthington answered, as Kory Nickel scored on the power play. The Trojans nearly tied the game, but Schmidt made two sprawling saves to preserve the lead.

Then, late in the game, Dockter picked up a loose puck in front of the net and fired a shot over the shoulder of the Trojan goalie, giving the Eagles the 3-1 victory.

The Eagles outshot Worthington 24-14 for the game. Schmidt finished with 13 saves.
