Rochester Lourdes used a suffocating defense and a three-goal burst in the final period to claim a 4-0 victory over the Windom Area boys hockey team in Saturday’s regular-season finale.
Lourdes scored a shorthanded goal early in the second period, breaking the scoreless deadlock. Lourdes then netted a pair of power play goals in the third period before sealing the win with an empty-net goal.
Lourdes held the Eagles to 14 shots on goal, outshooting Windom 38-14. Goalie Dan Stubbe finished with 34 saves in the loss.
Luverne 2-1-1-0 = 4
Windom Area 2-2-0-1 = 5
Luverne rallied to tie the Windom Area boys hockey team three different times Friday. But in overtime, Alex Espenson took a pass from Brady Espenson and gave the Eagles a 5-4 victory over the Cardinals at the Windom Arena.
The Eagles scored a pair of goals in the first period, as Brady Espenson and Sonny Heil each found the net. But on each occasion, Luverne scored just over 20 seconds later, eventually tying the game at 2-2 after one period.
The Cardinals took a 3-2 lead early in the second before the Eagles answered. Alex Espenson netted the tying goal and Heil scored on the power play, giving the Eagles a 4-3 lead.
Luverne tied the game with a power play goal early in the third period, but the score remained tied 4-4 through the end of regulation. The Eagles immediately put pressure on the Cardinals in overtime, outshooting Luverne 7-1 before Alex Espenson recorded the game winner.
Windom Area outshot Luverne 40-26 for the game. Goalie Dan Stubbe finished with 22 saves.Â
