The Windom Area girls hockey team got some welcome news Monday and rode that momentum after a long bus ride, topping Morris-Benson Area 4-2 in Benson.
Senior Bethany Schmidt, who had missed several weeks of action with a wrist injury, returned to the ice Monday.
And with sophomore goalie Kaylie Baerg out of the lineup with a knee sprain, Schmidt moved from her usual spot as a forward back to her former position, goalie.
Schmidt’s presence in net was felt immediately, as she turned away all 11 Storm first period shots.
The Eagles turned defense into offense in the first period. Presley Dockter found the back of the net twice in the first period, giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead.
Early in the second, Ella Dockter stretched the lead to 3-0 before the Storm answered with a pair of goals, cutting the Eagle lead to 3-2 after two periods.
But early in the third, Elly Bang took a centering pass from Presley Dockter and fired a shot past the Storm goalie, sealing the win.
The Eagles outshot the Storm 48-23 in the game. Schmidt finished with 21 saves.Â
