Boys hockey holds off Redwood

Redwood Valley 0-1-1 = 2
Windom Area 2-1-1 = 4

The Windom Area boys hockey team overcame a late rally Monday night, holding off Redwood Valley for a 4-2 victory at the Windom Arena.

Leading 3-1 in the third period, the Eagles killed off a five-minute Cardinal power play. Shortly after the penalty expired, the Cardinals pulled their goalie and cut the lead to 3-2.

But with the Cardinals emptying the net for an extra attacker, the Eagles iced the game when Brady Espenson scored into the empty net.

Alex Espenson and Caleb Rivera scored first period goals, staking the Eagles to a 2-0 lead.

After Redwood cut the deficit to 2-1, Zach Espenson scored on a slap shot, stretching the lead to 3-1.

Redwood’s Tyson Clark scored with 2:57 left on the clock, cutting the deficit to 3-2. But just 36 seconds later, Brady Espenson scored the empty net goal.

The Eagles outshot the Cardinals 47-22 in the game. Goalie Dan Stubbe finished with 20 saves.
