Five-goal third lifts Eagle boys past Redwood

The Windom Area boys hockey team saw a lead slip away Thursday, but a dominant third period allowed the Eagles to claim a 9-4 victory over Redwood Valley at Redwood Falls.

The Eagles jumped to a 3-1 lead after one period, but Redwood tied the game at 4-4 after two.

But Alex Espenson’s third goal of the game, 16 seconds into the third period, gave the Eagles the lead back. The Eagles went on to score five unanswered goals in the final period for the win.

Espenson got the Eagles on the board 43 seconds into the game, then netted a second goal 7:47 into the opening period. The Eagles scored again five seconds later, as Caleb Rivera knocked in a shot.

Redwood Valley battled back with a goal late in the first and two in the second, tying the game at 3-3. Sonny Heil gave the Eagles a 4-3 lead with a power play goal at the 10:21 mark of the second, but Redwood scored two minutes later, tying the game at 4-4.

Early in the third, Alex Espenson scored his third goal of the game. Heil then netted hit second goal at the 5:40 mark. Zach Espenson and Alex Espenson added power play goals and Keegan Classen scored with 17 seconds left on the clock, sealing the win.

The Eagles scored on three of their six power play chances in the game.

Windom Area outshot Redwood 53-27 in the game. Goalie Dan Stubbe finished with 23 saves.
