Eagle boys rally past Fairmont

Fairmont 1-1-1 = 3
Windom Area 1-2-4 = 7

Three days after putting 16 goals on the scoreboard against Fairmont, the Windom Area boys hockey team had a much tougher time with the Cardinals Monday at the Windom Arena.

Fairmont held leads of 1-0 and 2-1, then tied the Eagles at 3-3 early in the third period. But four unanswered goals in the final period lifted the Eagles to a 7-3 victory.

Trailing 1-0 halfway through the first period, the Eagles tied the game when Ethan Rabbe intercepted a pass and scored unassisted.

Fairmont scored a power play goal 2:45 into the second period, but the Eagles tied the game at 2-2 less than a minute later when Ben Purrington rifled a shot over the shoulder of the Fairmont goalie.

Then, at the 4:05 mark of the second, Alex Espenson picked off a pass and scored an unassisted goal, giving the Eagles a 3-2 lead.

Fairmont scored 18 seconds into the third, tying the game at 3-3. The Cardinals then had a golden chance to take the lead with two minutes of a 5-on-3 power play. But as the Eagles’ first penalty expired, Brady Espenson came out of the penalty box, won a race to the puck and scored on a shorthanded wrap-around shot, giving the Eagles a 4-3 lead.

The Eagles padded the lead when Caleb Rivera redirected a pass into the net at the 9:52 mark. A minute later, Alex Espenson scored his second goal of the night for a 6-3 lead.

The Eagles sealed the game with an empty net goal from Sonny Heil in the closing minutes.

The Eagles outshot Fairmont 42-32 in the game. Goalie Dan Stubbe finished with 29 saves.
