Eagle offense erupts in rout at Fairmont

The Windom Area boys hockey team erupted on offense Friday night, particularly on the power play, as the Eagles routed Fairmont 16-2 at Fairmont.

The Eagles scored eight power play goals in 10 chances in the game, including scoring multiple times while on a five-minute power play and two five-on-three situations.

Fairmont got on the board in the first minute of the game, but the Eagles scored 12 unanswered goals over the next two periods. Wyatt Haugen and Brady Espenson scored a pair of four-on-four goals, while Zach Espenson, Brady Espenson and Sonny Heil added power play goals to give the Eagles a 5-1 lead after one period.

In the second period, Zach Espenson, Alex Espenson and Heil added powerplay goals. Chase Hamlett, Ethan Purrington and Kaleb LaCanne added even-strength goals before Alex Espenson scored on a 5-on-3 power play, giving the Eagles a 12-1 lead.

Fairmont netted a goal to start the third period, but the Eagles tacked on four more goals. Jacob Van Norman scored his first career goal. Ben Purrington added a goal on a 5-on-3 power play. Brady Espenson capped a hat trick and Ben Purrington added a second goal late.

The Eagles outshot the Cardinals 50-28 in the game. Dan Stubbe recorded 22 saves, while Cody Hockel added four saves.
