Second round of COVID relief grants could be awarded Tuesday

The Cottonwood County Board of Commissioners will hold a special meeting Tuesday, beginning at 9 a.m., at the Law Enforcement Center Meeting Room in Windom.

The board is expected to finalize disbursement of roughly $250,000 in COVID relief grants through the Minnesota CARES Business Relief Act.

At this week’s regular meeting, the board reviewed the businesses and nonprofits that applied for funding.

In this round of applications, businesses would take top priority. Businesses and nonprofits that previously applied for relief grants were eligible for an additional $1,500, while first-time applicants were eligible for $3,500.

After reviewing applications, the board determined that 26 businesses and 18 nonprofits were eligible to receive $3,500. Another 33 businesses and 16 nonprofits were eligible to receive $1,500, while two business applicants were being reviewed. That brought the total applied for to $234,000.

The board noted that the state specified that the remainder of the funds should be distributed to businesses hit hardest during the most recent state shutdown — particularly bars and restaurants.
