Late goal lifts Eagle boys

The Windom Area boys hockey team saw a three-goal lead evaporate Friday night, but a hat trick from senior Alex Espenson included the game-winning goal with 1:07 left on the clock in a 6-5 Eagle win over Marshall at the Windom Arena.

The Eagle offense relentlessly attacked the Tiger net, outshooting Marshall 42-16 in the game. But the Tigers were able to capitalize on three of their five power play chances, including two in the third period, to rally from a three-goal deficit.

Trailing 1-0 late in the first, the Eagles tied the game on a goal from Sonny Heil. Then, in the second period, the Eagles trailed 2-1 before Brady Espenson scored. Ethan Purrington added a goal and Alex Espenson scored on the power play, giving the Eagles a 4-2 lead.

Alex Espenson added a goal 1:59 into the third period, giving Windom Area a 5-2 lead. But Marshall answered with a pair of power play goals and a third goal with 2:26 left on the clock. But with 1:07 left in the game, Alex Espenson scored off a feed from Brady Espenson, giving the Eagles the win.

Dan Stubbe finished with 11 saves for the Eagles.
