Eagle boys top Trojans, earn season sweep

Worthington 0-0-1 = 1
Windom Area 0-2-1 = 3

After needing a late rally and overtime to defeat Worthington Friday, the Windom Area boys hockey team was more in control Monday.

The Eagles took command with a pair of second period goals, then added an insurance goal in the third, completing the home-and-home sweep of the Trojans with a 3-1 win at the Windom Arena.

After a scoreless first period, Worthington took a penalty in the opening moments of the second period. Windom Area capitalized, as Alex Espenson stuffed in a rebound. Wyatt Haugen and Brady Espenson assisted on the power play goal.

The Eagles continued to pepper the Trojan net until the final minutes of the period, when Caleb Rivera pounced on a loose puck off a faceoff and slid a backhand shot past the Trojan goalie for a 2-0 lead.

Then, 2:11 into the third period, Evan Mathis scooped up a rebound of a Ben Purrington shot, scoring the first goal of his varsity career for a 3-0 Eagle lead.

Worthington snapped the shutout with a power play goal late in the game, but could get no closer after pulling the goalie in the closing minutes.

Goalie Dan Stubbe finished with 18 saves.
