The Windom Police Department is warning residents about a gun permit scam that may hit their text messages.
According to Windom Assistant Police Chief Cory Hillesheim people may receive a text message offering a ‘Concealed Carry Gun Permit” along with the words:
“Today is the final day you can get a Concealed Carry Gun Certificate Permit. Download it here.”
Those instructions are followed by a link and the words “Takes only 15 minutes.”
“Do not click the link,” Hillesheim said. “This is a scam.”
Upon further investigation, we’ve learned that this is a nationwide scam. The link is not generated by any official agency. Hillesheim said it is a good idea to avoid clicking on links within unsolicited e-mails or texts. Often these are malicious, or are an effort to secure your private information.
If you have been the target of a scam, your first contact should be the local authorities. Also, feel free to contact us with details (we can keep your name confidential, if you wish).
