Viola Liepold, 91, of Heron Lake died May 4, 2018, at Lakeview Assisted Living in Heron Lake. Mass of Christian Burial was Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Heron Lake with Father Rick Coletti officiating. Special music was provided by Bonnie Henkels, organist; and the Sacred Heart Choir, vocalists. Lectors were Bethany Zishka and Brittany Henning. Gift bearers were Viola's grandchildren. Servers were Andrew and Matthew Madsen. Casket bearers were Viola's grandchildren. Honorary bearers were Viola's great-grandchildren. Burial was at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Heron Lake. LaCanne Family Funeral Service of Windom handled the funeral arrangements. Viola Therisa Klenken was born March 28, 1927, to Frank and Therisa (Pohlman) Klenken in Adrian. She attended school in Adrian until third grade when her family moved to Wilmont. Her family moved to other towns before settling near Wilder. Viola graduated from Windom High School in 1945. In 1947, Viola married Leonard F. Liepold at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Heron Lake. Viola and Leonard lived on Leonard's family farm for 69 years, where they farmed and raised their five children. In 2016, Viola moved to Lakeview Assisted Living in Heron Lake. Viola was involved in her church, CCW, Foresters and taught religion classes for many years. She also volunteered at Lakeview Nursing Home for many years and belonged to the Weimer Township Birthday Club. In 2001, she was named Jackson County Outstanding Senior. Viola enjoyed her garden and flowers, as well as cooking and baking. She always had chocolate chip cookies ready for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who also loved her Christmas tree cookies during the holiday. Viola and Leonard enjoyed traveling and many bus trips they took together. In earlier years they enjoyed dancing on the weekend with friends at the Coliseum. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard in 2016; a great-grandson, Tyler Veld in 2006; a brother, Alfred; and sisters: Marie (Jerry) Durenberger, Christina Klenken and Aletha (Dewey) McLain. Survivors include her four sons: Jim (Lynne) Liepold, Bob (Martha) Leipold, Ken (Jacki) Liepold and Gordy (Mary) Liepold, all of Heron Lake; a daughter, Lois (Darwin) Veld of Lismore; 16 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Joyce Klenken.
