Honorary bearers were Casey Nelson, Payton Nelson, Colin Clerc and Waleed Ishaque.
Burial with full military honors provided by American Legion Post 389 of Mt. Lake was at Mt. Lake City Cemetery in Mt. Lake.
LaCanne Family Funeral Service of Windom handled the funeral arrangements.
Norman Gene Nelson was born Sept. 19, 1935, to Ole and Viola (Renken) Nelson in Carson, N.D. He grew up on a farm between Pipestone and Lake Benton.
Norman joined the Minnesota Army National Guard at age 18 and served for one year before joining the regular Army for two years and serving in Germany. When he returned to the States, he went back to the National Guard and served for another 30 years.
In 1957, Norm married Esther Gundermann at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Fulda. They lived in Pipestone, Jackson and, for the last 45 years, in Mt. Lake.
Norm worked in sales his whole life - in groceries, feed, seed and, in retirement, he enjoyed doing garage sales. For a few years, he and Gene Friesen also did remodeling.
Norm was diagnosed with cancer in 2016 and recently became a resident of Good Samaritan Society-The Village in Mt. Lake.
Being of Norwegian heritage, Norm enjoyed trips to Norway as well as trips to Hawaii and bus trips with friends. In later years, he especially enjoyed watching TV Westerns.
He was preceded in death by a son, Danny; a daughter, Mary (Nelson) Clerc; and siblings: Alice and Ronald.
Survivors include his wife, Esther Nelson of Mt. Lake; children: David (Jenny) Nelson of Hanska, Mike (Kelly) Nelson of Mt. Lake, Mark (Lynn) Nelson of Ham Lake, Rick (Julie) Clerc of Windom, Lisa (Bjorn) Hurlen of Alexandria and Lona Nelson of Burnsville; 18 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and his siblings: Charlotte Johnson, Beverly (Gary) Mitchell, Laurenda (Jim) Frakes and Ole (Peggy) Nelson.
