Merlin "Johnny" Flatgard, 82, of Windom died Jan. 1, 2018, at Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls.
Funeral services were Monday at American Lutheran Church in Windom with Pastor Sarah Larson Tade officiating.
Special music was provided by Carol Vought, pianist.
Casket bearers were Skyler Blumberg, Morgan Blumberg, Aaron Flatgard, Jeromie Hacker, KC Flatgard and Howy Johnson.
Honorary bearer was Benjamin Breuer.
Military honors provided by American Legion Post 206 of Windom were held outside the church immediately following the service.
Burial will be at a later date at Lakeview Cemetery in Windom.
Merlin "Johnny" Flatgard was born May 7, 1935, to Alfred and Leona (Swanson) Flatgard in Lakefield. He was baptized and later confirmed in Lakefield and received his education in Lakefield.
Johnny enlisted in the U.S. Navy in the early 1950s and served until being honorably discharged.
in 1957, Johnny married Marilyn French at American Lutheran Church in Windom. They lived in Windom where Johnny worked for Lefty Arnold as an electrician. He then became building maintenance supervisor for MnDOT in the Southwest District until retiring 20 years ago.
In retirement, Johnny and Marilyn enjoyed wintering in Texas for many years.
Johnny was a longtime member of American Lutheran Church and American Legion Post 206, both in Windom.
He enjoyed golfing, watching sports, tinkering, traveling, going to casinos, bowling, playing cards, having coffee around town and spending time with family.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, Kelly Flatgard; a son, Kurt Flatgard; and five brothers: Dwayne, Jerry, James, Dick and Donovan Flatgard.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Marilyn Flatgard of Windom; a son, Kory (Angel) Flatgard of Windom; a daughter, Theresa (Dale) Breuer of Estherville, Iowa; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
