Donavan "Shorty" Flatgard, 80, of Windom died Sept. 3, 2017, at Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne. A memorial service was Thursday at American Lutheran Church in Windom with Pastor Sara Larsen Tade officiating. Special music was provided by Dustin Stevens, pianist; and Mike Foley, vocalist. Full military honors provided by Windom American Legion Post 206 were held at the church following the service. LaCanne Family Funeral Service and Aqua Green Cremation of Windom handled the funeral arrangements. Donavan "Shorty" Flatgard was born Oct. 7, 1936, to Alfred and Leona (Swanson) Flatgard in Lakefield. He received his early education in Lakefield before later graduating from Windom High School. Shorty enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1953 and was honorably discharged in 1962. In 1964, Shorty married Roberta "Buzzy" Elinor Grantz at the Methodist Church in Jackson. They lived in Windom where Shorty was owner/operator of Windom TV and Appliance for 25 years. He then built and operated the Windom Motel for 15 years until retiring in 1987. Recently, Shorty became a resident of Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne. Shorty was a longtime member of American Lutheran Church in Windom. He also was a member and past president of the Windom Hospital board and Sanford Regional Hospital board, a member and past president of the Windom Area Chamber of Commerce and a member of American Legion Post 206 and Shriners, both in Windom. He was preceded in death by four brothers: Dwayne, Jerry, James and Dick Flatgard. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Roberta "Buzzy" Flatgard of Windom; a son, Scott Flatgard of Sioux Falls; and a brother, John (Marilyn) Flatgard of Windom.
