Gilbert Johnson Jr.
Gilbert "Gil" Johnson, 81, of Two Harbors, formerly of Windom, died Aug. 22, 2017, at Minnesota Veteran's Home in Silver Bay.
A memorial service will be held Sept. 9 at 11 a.m., at American Lutheran Church in Windom.
Visitation will be held Sept. 9 from 9 to 11 a.m., at the church in Windom.
Cavallin Funeral Home of Two Harbors is handling the funeral arrangements.
Gilbert Johnson Jr., was born July 26, 1936, to Gilbert Sr. and Luella (Solater) Johnson in Cottonwood County. He grew up in Lamberton and attended a one-room school four miles from his family's farm. He began attending Lamberton High School in seventh grade and graduated from Lamberton High School in 1955.
After working for a year in Butterfield, Gilbert entered the U.S. Army and served for 2½ years in Okinawa.
After his military service, he moved to Windom, where he purchased a house.
In 1964, Gilbert married Diane Peterson. They bought a farm north of Windom, where they raised their children and animals.
Over the years, Gilbert also was employed with Wabasso Farm Bureau, Windom Farm Bureau, Hy-Pane, Cenex, Suburban Gas and Nasby Companies before starting his own grain bin and dryer business.
He also helped his children participate in the Dale Diggers 4-H Club.
Following a heart attack and stroke in 1992, Gilbert retired and enjoyed spending time with his six grandchildren. Over the years, he also enjoyed camping, traveling, fishing, hunting, boating and telling hunting and fishing stories.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Diane in 2010; son, Travis; and brothers, Marvin Johnson and Truman Johnson.
Survivors include his children: Lisa (Randy) McCloud of Eden Prairie, Tonya Muller of Windom and Kevin (Jennifer) Johnson of Two Harbors; six grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and sisters-in-law, Diane Johnson and Joann Johnson.
