Helen E. Freking, 93, of Windom died July 25, 2017, at Maple Lawn Nursing Home in Fulda.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m., at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Windom.
Special music will be provided by Colleen Ortmann, organist, and Mike Foley, vocalist.
Casket bearers will be Laura Meyer, Sarah Vortherms, Jenna Wendorff, Ben Freking, Will Freking, Maria Freking, Michael Freking, Terra Freking and Jamie Freking.
Ushers will be Al Bartosh and Francis Bartosh. Gift bearers will be George and Karen Mathias.
A private burial will be held at a later date in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in rural Heron Lake.
Visitation will be held Friday from 5 to 7 p.m., at LaCanne Family Funeral Home in Windom and continue Saturday at the church for one hour prior to the service.
LaCanne Family Funeral Service of Windom is handling the funeral arrangements.
Helen E. Mathias was born June 3, 1924, in Heron Lake to the late Williams and Leona (Rostimily) Mathias. She was baptized and confirmed at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Heron Lake. She attended country school and later Heron Lake Public School, graduating in the class of 1941. She then attended the College of St. Benedict in St. Joseph, where she received a degree in dietetics.
On Sept. 7, 1947, Helen married George Freking at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Heron Lake. The marriage was blessed with four children: Lenore, Dan, Doug and Joe. After marriage, Helen and George continued farming until June, 1955, when George became postmaster at the Heron Lake Post Office. Helen worked in the dietary department of the Heron Lake Hospital and Nursing Home and was a census taker for many years.
In 1973, George became the postmaster of the Windom Post Office and they made their home in Windom. After George's retirement, they continued to live in Windom. In Windom, they became members of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.
Helen's health had been declining recently and she became a resident of the Maple Lawn Nursing Home in Fulda.
Helen was a member of church women's groups, the Gray Ladies and RSVP. She enjoyed playing bridge and reading.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George Freking; two brothers, Clayton and John Mathias; and one sister, Maxine Winkler.
Survivors include her four children: Lenore (Rick) Wendorff of Fulda; Dr. Dan (Sharon) Freking of Edina; Doug (Jennifer) Freking of Lilburn, Ga.; and Joe (Pam) Freking of Arden Hills; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother, George (Karen) Mathias of Windom; and three sisters-in-law: Margaret Henkels of Heron Lake, Marion Freking of Northfield and Sister Marcan Freking of Rochester.
