John H. Korfe, 97, of Windom, died June 24, 2017, at Pine View Assisted Living in Windom.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1:30 p.m., at Windom Evangelical Free Church in Windom with Pastor Dan Van Loon officiating.
Special music will be provided by Courtney Ryberg, pianist; and Alan Saffert and Harm Daniel Korfe (pre-recorded), vocalists.
Casketbearers will be Derek Wagner, Cory Race, Corey McLane, Mark Stevens, Brian DeVries and Ryan Evers.
Burial with full military honors provided by American Legion Post 206 of Windom will be at Delft Cemetery in Delft.
Visitation will be held Thursday from noon to 1:30 p.m., at the church.
LaCanne Family Funeral Service of Windom is handling the funeral arrangements.
John Hiram Korfe was born Aug. 6, 1919, to Harm Daniel and Anna (Harms) Korfe on a farm near Corona, S.D. As a youngster, John and his family moved to the Windom area where he attended country school.
In 1942, John was drafted into the U.S. Army Air Corps and was discharged in 1945. John was proud of having served in World War II and in 2010, participated in the Minnesota Honor Flight to Washington, D.C.
In 1945, John married Irene M. Illsley in London, England. They were blessed with five children: Sandra, Shirley, Philip, Robin and Vicki. John and Irene lived in Windom, where John owned and operated Korfe's Standard Service from 1952 to 1982. Through the business, he made many new friends and loyal customers.
John enjoyed spending time with friends and family at home, on trips, at the lake and, most recently, at Pine View Retirement Community.
A lifelong Christian, John was a faithful follower of Jesus and his teachings. He was a longtime member of Windom Evangelical Free Church and Windom American Legion Post 206.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene; two brothers; and six sisters.
Survivors include his children: Sandra (Roy) Beheler of Las Vegas, Nev.; Shirley (Bob) Brown of Helena, Mont.; Philip Korfe of Sioux Falls; Robin Race of Rochester; and Vicki (Ross) Wagner of Aitkin; four grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; brothers, Alfred ("Buddy") Korfe and Clarence (Thelma) Korfe of Staples; a sister, Jean Bolstad of Windom; and loyal friends: Rose Bispo, Ali DeVries, Kay Evers and Mark Stevens.
