Elta Barker

Elta E. Barker, 94, of Jeffers died Feb. 19, 2017, at Westbrook Good Samaritan Society in Westbrook.
Funeral services were Thursday at United Methodist Church in Jeffers with Pastor Kathy Brandt officiating.
Special music was provided by Carol Vought, organist; and Morgen Pederson, vocalist.
Pallbearers were Ruth Ann Determan, Steve Barker, Lee Hanish, David Jorgenson, Dwayne Barker and Kim Holck.
Honorary bearers were Elta's grandchildren, great-grandchildren, step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
Interment was at Memory Gardens Cemetery in rural Windom.
Elta Elsena Menken was born Nov. 13, 1922, to Tebbo H. and Etta J. (Eucken) Menken on the farm in Amboy Township of Cottonwood County. She was baptized and later confirmed at Jeffers Methodist Church.
She received her education from Jeffers Public School before attending Mankato Business College for a year.
In 1950, Elta married Myron Sweeney at the Catholic Church in Jeffers. They were blessed with three children, Charles, Gordon and Mary Jo, before Myron's death in 1954.
In 1958, Elta married Bill Barker in Waseca. They were blessed with two sons, Robert and Larry, and lived in the Jeffers area. Elta worked for many years as a bank teller at Jeffers State Bank.
After Bill's death in 1985, Elta continued living in Jeffers until moving into Good Samaritan Society-Westbrook.
A member of Jeffers Methodist Church, Elta was involved in Ruth Circle and served as a Sunday School teacher. She also was a member of the Jeffers Legion Auxiliary for over 63 years, serving as treasurer for many of those years.
Elta enjoyed dancing in her younger years, fishing, the Minnesota Twins, bird watching, visiting with friends, bingo, playing cards (especially solitaire) and was a member of a bridge club.
In addition to her two husbands, Myron Sweeney and Bill Barker, Elta was preceded in death by two sons, Larry Barker and Gordon Sweeney; four brothers: George Menken, Tebbo G. Menken, Edwin Menken and John Menken; and a sister, Esther Rasmussen.
Survivors include her three children: Charles (Lynn) Sweeney of Sleepy Eye; Mary Jo (Jim) Um-scheid of Spencer, Iowa; and Robert (Julie) Barker of Jeffers; four step-children: David Barker of Rock Springs, Wyo.; Diana Dusek of Havre, Mont.; Maureen (Marlin) Palm of Mt. Lake; and JoAnn (Pat) Flaherty of Butterfield; four granddaughters; four great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; four siblings: Richard (Irene) Menken of Windom, Hilda (John) Brand of Jeffers, Elsie Vieregge of Apple Valley and Anne (Donald) Roefer of Round Rock, Texas; and brothers- and sisters-in-law: Boonying Menken of Thailand, Peggy Matter, Wilma Holck, Dick and Dudi Moots, and Ron Freyholtz.
