Robert Wendel of Bastrop, Texas, formerly of Windom, died Nov. 24, 2012, after a long battle with a brain tumor.
A memorial service will be held Jan. 3 in Bastrop, Texas.
Robert Wayne Wendel was a 1963 graduate of Windom High School and a successful wrestler for the Eagles. He was a member of the Eagles' starting lineup already as a freshman and was a state champ as a senior.
He went on to wrestle at Mankato State University, where he achieved All-American honors from 1964 to 1967 with his team winning the NCAA championship in 1964-65.
He was later inducted into the Windom Area High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
After teaching English and coaching high school wrestling in Cambridge for 10 years, he entered the financial services industry. For 35 years, he helped public employees prepare for retirement, first in Minnesota, then New York and finally, starting in 1983, in Texas.
He enjoyed riding Harley-Davidson motorcycles through the Texas hill country, hunting feral hogs, raising quarter horses - including three world champion cutting horses, playing with his granddaughters and teaching them to ride horses. He also enjoyed living in Texas and building ranches.
He was preceded in death by a son, Billy Robert Wendel; his parents, Mervin and Lorraine Aas; and siblings: Roger, Marilyn and Sandra.
Survivors include his wife of 23 years, Susan Weems Wendel; his children: Jessica (Matthew) Doehling, Sean Marcus (Abbie) Neighbours and Sarah Neighbours (Clinton) Arthur; and seven granddaughters.
