Saved by a dog
|As spring arrives, we see more walkers on our streets, raising the odds of a car vs. pedestrian accident.|
We all know who loses in such a crash, but it's no treat for the driver. A while back I wrote a piece about walkers whose dark clothes make them nearly invisible to motorists. An incident I recently experienced drives the point home.
On a dark night, as I drove east across Windom's Highway 62 Des Moines River bridge, the street seemed clear, all the way to McDonald's. Suddenly, out of nowhere, I saw a man and dog cross the street in front of me.
Actually, I saw a white dog-and then a man dressed in black. That night, we were fortunate for two things: I was driving fairly slow and the guy's dog is white. My advice: Wear a reflector or something white next time you go for an evening walk.
