Internet Explorer Script Errors

Rick Frederickson
Computer Technician

Life with computers used to be so simple, especially with the Internet. You rarely had to worry about viruses. You didn't have to update Adobe or Java every week. And Internet Explorer worked with every website, no matter what it was.
Times have changed. Now I field phone calls from frantic callers telling me they can't access this or print that from the Internet. What is going wrong?
In many cases, it has to do with an incompatibility between the version of Internet Explorer people use and the website software the website uses. It can be frustrating. Just this past weekend I got a call from someone who was flying out the next day and needed to print their boarding passes. However, every time they tried to print they got a 'script error' and the computer wouldn't print.
As I said, it is an incompatibility issue. Newer computers are built using what is called a 64-bit operating system instead of the old 32-bit system. It's still Windows, just 64-bit. In the computer world, 64-bit is a good thing. Most of the time.
However, the 64-bit Windows uses 64-bit Internet Explorer. In many cases that's the problem. You see, some websites and the way they function cannot handle 64-bit Internet Explorer. Hence the script error.
What's the solution? It's pretty simple. There's also a 32-bit Internet Explorer on the computer. It's just not the main one. Here's how to get to it: Go to START/ALL PROGRAMS. The list should contain two Internet Explorers. The top one is Internet Explorer 64-bit. The second one is the 32-bit version. Use it if you are having script errors. If you want it on your desktop, right click on it and choose SEND TO - DESKTOP. That will create a shortcut to it on your desktop.
Have a Happy - and safe - New Year!
