Sorry folks, it's time for grumpy Rick to visit you today. However, please remember, this is only if the shoe fits . . . I want to remind you that your device, whether it's a computer, iPad, tablet, phone or router, is your responsibility. That means you are ultimately responsible for what happens when you own and use it: Maintenance. Maintenance includes software updates and hardware. For you to have a better opportunity to remain safe on your computer it must be updated. You may have to wait at times for your device to update. You may have to push some buttons that make you feel uncomfortable. You may have to clean your device from time to time. Security. I've mentioned updat- ing. However, you are also responsible for your passwords. No one else is. Period. Passwords include email, websites and lock codes for tablets and phones. You are also responsible for self-control so that you don't click/tap on everything that happens to cross your path while you are on your device. Free is not free. One more thing about security - you should have and maintain your antivirus. You do know what your antivirus is and does, right? Repairs. Like any machine, your device may need repairs. Accidents happen and things break. This includes both hardware and software. Sometimes repairs take time. Sometimes parts need to be ordered. Your local smiling computer tech may not be able to wave a magic wand or sprinkle magic pixie dust to instantly fix your device. Patience is a virtue! One more thing about repairs is that they do cost money. Please don't complain when your local smiling computer tech hands you a bill. Replacement. Like any machine, your device wears out or becomes obsolete. If writing out a check for a new one hurts too much, then plan ahead. Most devices should be replaced at five years. Depending on the device, this may come sooner or you may be able to delay it a little longer. Education. This is probably the hardest one. I know computers and other technology devices have only been around for 25 years or so. I know that your local smiling computer tech helps you whenever they can. But here's a secret: They most likely wish you had to take a test, similar to a driving test, to use your device. Tongue in cheek aside, we do like our customers! But it would be much easier and less stressful for all of us if you work at taking responsibility for your devices. We are very willing to help!
