New pairing will be an evolving process

Joel Alvstad
Sports Editor

Any time you have multiple entities trying to work together, there is going to be some give and take.
When you have schools working together, it is always a delicate balancing act.
The pairing agreement between the Mt. Lake Public, Mt. Lake Christian and Comfrey schools has been one that has now had two spring seasons in the books.
By almost all accounts, the pairing has been a good thing. It has given players the chance to develop at appropriate levels, with full junior high, JV and varsity programs.
It has also given the flexibility to use facilities in both Mt. Lake and Comfrey - flexibility that was crucial this spring, when baseball made the determination that its indoor practices would all be held in Comfrey.
Beginning next fall, the pairing will cover all sports except football.
As it is currently written, the pairing agreement calls for practices and home events to be held in Mt. Lake, with the understanding that at least one home event per season would be scheduled for Comfrey.
Like all agreements, this one should evolve. And, with time, I'm certain that it will.
Adding Comfrey to the pairing in all sports provides an opportunity for Comfrey's students to continue participating in athletics at a high level. It also provides something the current Wolverine programs, particularly in the winter, desperately need - space.
The spring teams have seen the benefit of having the Comfrey facility as an option to host practices and events. I think Wolverine fall and winter teams could see a similar benefit.
And while I don't necessarily think the pairing should designate specific sports to be played entirely in Comfrey, I do think it would be wise to use the facility as much as possible.
During the fall season, it seems logical to divide the varsity and junior high volleyball practices between the two sites. During the winter, boys and girls basketball practices could be at different sites, or varsity and junior high could be at different sites.
I look forward to seeing the full pairing between MLA and Comfrey work and am curious to see the pairing agreement evolve.
Coaching vacancies
There is one area program that I know of that currently is searching for a new head coach.
The Westbrook-Walnut Grove volleyball team will be under new leadership after Jessica Laleman resigned her teaching and coaching position in the district.
