A roof at Island Park
A week ago in this space, I mentioned the value of Island Park's baseball field as a marketing tool for our community.
Well, I'm sure many residents have noticed that the beautiful ballpark is gaining a new canopy over the grandstand behind home plate. It is a project that dates back to the Windom Baseball Association's discussions of ballpark improvements, around 2010.
The WBA board wanted to make the canopy part of that early project, but there were bigger needs: the new concession stand, backstop, scoreboard, maintenance shed and batting cage. We accomplished those things with the help of the Remick Foundation and terrific support from businesses, individual donations and volunteers.
I am no longer on the WBA board, but I know the group was proud of the fact that few tax dollars (beyond the school's scoreboard contribution) went into the project. Also, tax dollars are not being used to build the canopy. Hopefully, folks will keep on supporting Island Park - a phenomenal marketing tool.
