Eagle girls rally past Saints; Chargers win in OT

Windom 06-27 = 33
St. James 12-16 = 28

After a dismal offensive first half, the Windom Eagle girls basketball team roared to life in the second half, rallying for a 33-28 win at St. James Tuesday in St. James.

Windom held St. James scoreless for the first 10 minutes of the first half, but the Saints closed the half with a 12-2 run while the Eagles scored only six first-half points.

But in the second half, the Eagle offense attacked the basket. Meanwhile, the Eagle defense forced the Saints into poor shots much of the game. St. James finished 10-of-58 from the field, shooting at a 17 percent clip.

Maurissa Isaacs led the Eagles with 16 points. Delaney Smith added 10 points in the win.

HLO 30-27-05 = 62
WWG 22-35-09 = 66

Westbrook-Walnut Grove fought off a 10-point deficit early in the second half and a six-point deficit in the final minutes of regulation to force overtime, then outscored Heron Lake-Okabena 9-5 in overtime to claim a 66-62 victory Tuesday in Westbrook.

HLO led by eight at halftime and pushed the lead back to 10 early in the second half, but WWG battled back. Grace Woelber was a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line in the second half and scored 11 points and freshman Bethany Byers dropped in nine points in the second half. A steal and lay-up from Camryn Bunting with 15 seconds left sent the game to overtime, tied 57-57.

In overtime, HLO scored the first four points, but WWG battled back with two buckets from Byers and a basket from Brittany Erickson. Two late free throws from Woelber sealed the win.

Woelber led the Chargers with 21 points and added six assists. Byers scored a career-high 16 points, with 14 coming in the second half and overtime. Bunting finished with nine points, 16 rebounds and five steals.

Ellsworth 19-10 = 29
MLA 21-28 = 49

Tight defensive pressure in the second half allowed Mt. Lake Area to turn a two-point halftime lead into a 20-point 49-29 victory over Ellsworth Tuesday in Mt. Lake.

The Wolverines held Ellsworth to 10 second half points, with the defensive pressure leading to fast-break scoring opportunities in the second half.

Taylor Naas led MLA with 19 points. Margo Stoesz added nine points in the win.

RRC 23-15 = 38
SWC 36-46 = 82

Turnovers plagued the Red Rock Central girls basketball team Tuesday as the Falcons fell 82-38 to Southwest Christian in Edgerton.

The Eagles pulled away early in the first half, building a 13-point lead. SWC then outscored the Falcons 46-15 in the second half. RRC finished with 29 turnovers in the game.
