The Mt. Lake Area football team opens the Class 9-Man State Tournament tonight with a rematch of a regular-season game from Week 4.
MLA will face Section 2 Nine-Man champion Russell-Tyler-Ruthton, beginning at 5 p.m. The game will be played at the new turf field located at New Ulm Public High School, 1600 Oak Street in New Ulm. In the past, football games played in New Ulm had been played at Johnson Park.
MLA currently has a record of 8-3 and advanced to the state tournament by virtue of a 58-14 win over Westbrook-Walnut Grove in the Section 3 Nine-Man championship game. MLA defeated Hills-Beaver Creek 14-6, then topped Nicollet 30-24 before the section finals.
RTR has a record of 9-2 and advanced to state with a 20-14 win over Red Rock Central in the Section 2 Nine-Man championship game. RTR defeated MACCRAY 60-0 and Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart 48-10 to advance to the section finals.
When the two teams met in Week 4 at Mt. Lake, MLA rallied from behind in the fourth quarter to claim a 26-22 victory. RTR has not lost since its loss to MLA.
