Class A State Meet
A blistering pace took a toll on the Mt. Lake Area boys cross country team Saturday, as the Wolverines finished 14th in the team standings at the Class A State Cross Country Meet, held at St. Olaf College in Northfield.

The Wolverines finished with 273 team points. Perham won a tight battle for the championship with 118 points. St. James Area was second with 148 points. Section 3A champion Lac Qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd finished fourth with 172 points.

The Wolverines got out of the starting chute quickly, trying to avoid the large logjam of runners around the first curve. But after lingering around the top 20 early in the race, the MLA frontrunners began to fall back in the pack.

Near the half-way mark, the Wolverines had settled in, position-wise. However, the final 400 meters saw Wolverine junior Dalton Piotter surge past several runners up the final hill, including senior teammate Nathan Runck.

Piotter finished 50th overall with a career-best time of 17:11.9. Runck placed 53rd with a time of 17:14.4.

Ryan Blomgren finished 100th (17:42.5), followed by Emilio Garcia de la Cruz in 128th (18:04). Josiah Gardiner was 171st (19:22.8), Emmanuel Fentanez 173rd (19:26.4) and Logan Pankonin 176th (20:40.1).
