Martins edge Pirates for state berth

Fairmont 000 001 010 = 2-2-0
Windom 000 000 010 = 1-4-4

Two unearned runs were costly for the Windom Pirates Friday night as the Pirates dropped a 2-1 decision to the Fairmont Martins at Island Park.

With the win, the Martins clinched the best-of-three Region 13C series 2-0 and earned a trip to the Class C State Tournament, which begins Aug. 18 in Green Isle, Norwood and Hamburg.

The game was scoreless until the top of the sixth inning, when the Martins when a dropped fly ball allowed the leadoff hitter to reach. A walk and a single loaded the bases before a sacrifice fly brought in the first run of the game.

Then, in the eighth, a one-out walk and another dropped fly ball in deep right-center field allowed the second Martin run to score.

Windom saw a golden chance to score fall by the wayside in the sixth inning. Luke Gilbertson led off with a single, Devin Nielsen was hit by a pitch and Jacob Johnson walked, loading the bases with one out. But back-to-back strikeouts ended the threat with no runs scored.

The Pirates broke through in the eighth inning. Danny Kneeland drew a two-out walk and scored on a Sam Huska single. Windom had the tying run at second base before a strikeout ended the threat.

The Pirates then had the potential tying run at third and the potential winning run at second in the bottom of the ninth, but a strikeout ended the game.

Gilbertson and Huska each had two hits for the Pirates in the loss.

Collin Lovell took the pitching loss, working eight innings. He allowed two unearned runs on two hits, walked three and struck out 13.

The loss doesn't eliminate the Pirates from post-season play, though, as Windom still has a chance to clinch the third seed from Region 13C. Windom will face Hadley in a best-of-three series, beginning Wednesday at Island Park, with the winner earning the third seed in the region.

Top-seeded Hadley dropped into the third-place series after losing its best-of-three series with fifth-seeded Milroy 2-0, following a 5-4, 12-inning loss Saturday.

The Pirates will host the first game of the series at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Game two will be Saturday at 2 p.m. in Hadley. A third game, if necessary, will be played Sunday at 2 p.m. in Hadley.

The Region 13C championship will be determined in a three-game series beginning Wednesday. Third-seeded Fairmont will host fifth-seeded Milroy at 7:30 p.m. Game two will be Friday at Milroy Irish Yard at 7:30 p.m., with game three, if necessary, returning to Fairmont at 2 p.m.
