Pirates drop first game to Martins

Windom 000 102 001 = 4-8-7
Fairmont 001 020 20X = 5-6-2

Defensive woes doomed the Windom Pirates in Wednesday's opening game of their Region 13C best-of-three series in Fairmont.

Seven Pirate errors allowed five unearned runs in the 5-4 Fairmont victory.

After Fairmont scored in the bottom of the third, the Pirates tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth on Dane Nielsen's RBI groundout.

Windom tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the sixth. Jack Mellstrom hit an RBI single and Danny Kneeland drew a bases-loaded walk.

But Fairmont scored twice in the bottom of the seventh, taking a 5-3 lead on a pair of Pirate errors.

Windom pulled to within 5-4 in the top of the ninth on Devin Nielsen's RBI single, but a flyout to right field ended the game.

Luke Gilbertson had three hits in the loss for the Pirates.

Martin County draftee Derek Shoen took the tough-luck loss for the Pirates despite a solid outing. Shoen scattered six hits in seven innings, walked one and struck out 11.

The Pirates will host Fairmont in game two of the series Friday, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at Island Park. If Windom wins, game three of the series will be played in Fairmont Sunday at 2 p.m.
