WWG 26-31 = 57
RRC 24-25 = 49

A strong defensive effort in the second half propelled Westbrook-Walnut Grove to a lead it wouldn't relinquish Saturday, as the second-seeded Chargers knocked off top-seeded Red Rock Central 57-49 in the Section 3A South championship game, played at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall.

The Chargers overcame a sluggish start by both teams to build a six-point lead in the first half. RRC was able to trim the deficit to two at the break, scoring on a buzzer-beating put-back by Spencer Halland.

In the second half, the Charger offense found its footing, hitting a trio of three-pointers early in the half to build a 10-point advantage.

Meanwhile, RRC's offense sputtered. The Falcons shot just 34 percent from the field for the game, including 3-of-23 from three-point range.

RRC also battled foul trouble in the post during the second half. Center Trevor Pederson sat much of the half with four fouls, then fouled out with just over four minutes to go in the game.

Matt Deprez and Tyson Elzenga each scored 13 points to pace WWG. Anthony Ross and Kyle Kuehl each added nine points.

Pederson led RRC with 13 points. Halland added 10 in the loss.
