The two Windom-Mt. Lake state wrestling qualifiers each came home with hardware over the weekend at the Class A State Wrestling Tournament, held in St. Paul.

Freshman Brett Willaby captured fourth place in the Class A 106-pound class, while sophomore Alex Borsgard finished fifth at 132 pounds.

Willaby started the tournament Friday with back-to-back wins to advance to the state semifinals. Willaby won his opening match 6-4 over Landon Byer of Frazee, then won an 11-2 major decision over Blake Vagle of New London-Spicer.

In Saturday's semifinals, Willaby took a 7-0 loss to eventual state champion Blake Legred of United South Central, dropping into the consolation round.

Willaby then won a 4-1 decision over Taylor DeFrang of Dover-Eyota to advance into the third-place match. In the third-place match, Willaby lost a 20-5 technical fall to Jackson Hale of Grand Meadow-LeRoy-Ostrander-Southland.

Borsgard began the tournament Friday with a come-from-behind 5-4 decision win over Kyle Cavanaugh of Caledonia. Borsgard then lost a 9-2 decision to Tanner Pasvogel of Sibley East, dropping into the wrestlebacks, where he won a 4-2 decision over Nolan Booge of Park Rapids.

On Saturday, Borsgard came from behind to pin Gage Zieske of Osakis in 4:46, clinching a spot in the medal round. Borsgard lost a 6-0 decision to Brendan Reiss of Minneota in a rematch of the Section 3A finals, dropping into the fifth-place match. There, Borsgard defeated Brandon Ortman of Pierz by injury default to finish in fifth place.

Liebl opened the tourney with a 10-4 win over Erick Lopez of Bloomington Kennedy, then lost a 23-8 technical fall to eventual champion Daniel Kerkvliet of Simley. Liebl was the only opponent Kerkvliet did not pin during the tourney.
