Cobras earn state medals The two Windom-Mt. Lake state wrestling qualifiers each came home with hardware over the weekend at the Class A State Wrestling Tournament, held in St. Paul.
Freshman Brett Willaby captured fourth place in the Class A 106-pound class, while sophomore Alex Borsgard finished fifth at 132 pounds.
Willaby started the tournament Friday with back-to-back wins to advance to the state semifinals. Willaby won his opening match 6-4 over Landon Byer of Frazee, then won an 11-2 major decision over Blake Vagle of New London-Spicer.
In Saturday's semifinals, Willaby took a 7-0 loss to eventual state champion Blake Legred of United South Central, dropping into the consolation round.
Willaby then won a 4-1 decision over Taylor DeFrang of Dover-Eyota to advance into the third-place match. In the third-place match, Willaby lost a 20-5 technical fall to Jackson Hale of Grand Meadow-LeRoy-Ostrander-Southland.
Borsgard began the tournament Friday with a come-from-behind 5-4 decision win over Kyle Cavanaugh of Caledonia. Borsgard then lost a 9-2 decision to Tanner Pasvogel of Sibley East, dropping into the wrestlebacks, where he won a 4-2 decision over Nolan Booge of Park Rapids.
On Saturday, Borsgard came from behind to pin Gage Zieske of Osakis in 4:46, clinching a spot in the medal round. Borsgard lost a 6-0 decision to Brendan Reiss of Minneota in a rematch of the Section 3A finals, dropping into the fifth-place match. There, Borsgard defeated Brandon Ortman of Pierz by injury default to finish in fifth place.
Bobcats fall short of medal round Wabasso-Red Rock Central's six state qualifiers each fell short of the medal round at the State Class AA wrestling tournament over the weekend in St. Paul.
WRRC senior Devan Liebl came one win shy of the medal round, finishing 2-2 at 195 pounds. Liebl opened the tourney with a 10-4 win over Erick Lopez of Bloomington Kennedy, then lost a 23-8 technical fall to eventual champion Daniel Kerkvliet of Simley. Liebl was the only opponent Kerkvliet did not pin during the tourney.
Liebl won his first wrestleback 8-0 over Devante Jelle of Hibbing, but lost a 6-5 decision to Neil Hanson of Milaca to bow out of the tourney.
Two Bobcats finished the tournament with one win each. At 285 pounds, senior Jared Welch won his opening bout, pinning Colton Hellman of Princeton in 3:16. Welch then lost a 5-2 decision to eventual champion Mitch Trigg of Foley. In the wrestlebacks, Welch lost a 5-0 decision to Tony Putz of St. Peter.
At 138, senior Tyson Doubler opened the tourney with an 8-0 loss to eventual state champion Keaten Schorr of Kasson-Mantorville. In the wrestlebacks, Doubler defeated Tim Stapleton of Waconia by injury default before falling 5-2 to Parker Huss of Scott West.
At 145, sophomore Jared Schroepfer lost his opening match 5-3 to Trevor Oberg of South St. Paul. Schroepfer was eliminated when Oberg lost his second match to eventual state runner-up Peter Nelson of St. Cloud Apollo.
At 170, junior Nick Altermatt lost a 7-5 decision to Noah Keith of Bloomington Kennedy. Altermatt was eliminated when Keith lost his second-round match to eventual state champion Patrick Kennedy of Kasson-Mantorville.
At 182, Mitchell Fulton lost his opening match 7-5 to Gabe Zierden of Albany. Fulton was eliminated when Zierden lost in the second round to eventual state runner-up Bobby Striggow of Orono.
