Two Cobras advance to state
The Windom-Mt. Lake Cobra wrestling team qualified two wrestlers for the Class A State Tournament and had 11 medalists at the Section 3A Tournament, held Saturday in Jackson.

Cobra freshman Brett Willaby and sophomore Alex Borsgard will represent the team in St. Paul after finishing in the top two in their respective weight classes.

Willaby claimed the Section 3A title at 106 pounds. Willaby opened with a fall, then claimed an 18-6 major decision in the semifinals. In the championship, Willaby won a 14-6 major decision over Grant Budden of Pipestone in a matchup of state-ranked individuals. Willaby was ranked sixth, but picked up his third win of the season over Budden, who is ranked third.

At 132 pounds, Borsgard opened the tournament with a fall. He then won a 10-3 decision in the semifinals, but lost a 5-2 decision in the finals to Brendan Reiss of Minneota. Borsgard had to wrestle Zach Poelaert of JCC for true second, but Borsgard earned a fall in 1:04 to secure a trip to state.

The Cobras had one other wrestler who competed in a true second match. At 195 pounds, sophomore Jabari Carlton was pinned in the first round of the tournament by Jamison Vanderwal of Pipestone. Carlton then battled all the way through the wrestlebacks with back-to-back pins. He then pinned Vanderwal in 1:11 in a rematch for third place. That gave Carlton a true second match against Evan Stoks of Canby, but Stoks recorded a fall in 5:26 to finish second. Carlton took third place.

Five other Cobras each finished in third place, but due to losses to the runner-up earlier in the tournament were prevented from wrestling back for true second.
