Individual first-round state matchups for local qualifiers
106#A: Brett Willaby (WML, fr., 35-5) vs. Landon Byer (Frazee, jr., 33-6). Willaby was rated sixth in the final state rankings while Byer was ninth.
132#A: Alex Borsgard (WML, so., 33-5) vs. Kyle Cavanaugh (Caledonia, so., 33-3). Borsgard was rated seventh in the final state rankings while Cavanaugh was third.
138#AA: Tyson Doubler (WRRC, sr., 24-8) vs. Keaten Schorr (Kasson-Mantorville, sr., 39-3). Doubler was not rated in the final rankings while Schorr was second.
145#AA: Jared Schroepfer (WRRC, so., 31-5) vs. Trevor Oberg (South St. Paul, sr., 13-3). Schroepfer was rated fifth in the final state rankings while Oberg was not rated.
170#AA: Nick Altermatt (WRRC, jr., 33-3) vs. Noah Keith (Bloomington Kennedy, sr., 32-4). Altermatt was rated sixth in the final state rankings while Keith was rated eighth.
182#AA: Mitchell Fulton (WRRC, sr., 28-5) vs. Gabe Zierden (Albany, so., 22-0). Neither wrestler was rated in the final state rankings.
195#AA: Devan Liebl (WRRC, sr., 31-3) vs. Erick Lopez (Bloomington Kennedy, sr., 29-11). Liebl was not rated in the final state rankings while Lopez was rated eighth.
285#AA: Jared Welch (WRRC, sr., 13-3) vs. Colton Hellman (Princeton, jr., 34-5). Welch was rated ninth in the final state rankings while Hellman was not rated.
Two Cobras advance to state The Windom-Mt. Lake Cobra wrestling team qualified two wrestlers for the Class A State Tournament and had 11 medalists at the Section 3A Tournament, held Saturday in Jackson.
Cobra freshman Brett Willaby and sophomore Alex Borsgard will represent the team in St. Paul after finishing in the top two in their respective weight classes.
Willaby claimed the Section 3A title at 106 pounds. Willaby opened with a fall, then claimed an 18-6 major decision in the semifinals. In the championship, Willaby won a 14-6 major decision over Grant Budden of Pipestone in a matchup of state-ranked individuals. Willaby was ranked sixth, but picked up his third win of the season over Budden, who is ranked third.
At 132 pounds, Borsgard opened the tournament with a fall. He then won a 10-3 decision in the semifinals, but lost a 5-2 decision in the finals to Brendan Reiss of Minneota. Borsgard had to wrestle Zach Poelaert of JCC for true second, but Borsgard earned a fall in 1:04 to secure a trip to state.
The Cobras had one other wrestler who competed in a true second match. At 195 pounds, sophomore Jabari Carlton was pinned in the first round of the tournament by Jamison Vanderwal of Pipestone. Carlton then battled all the way through the wrestlebacks with back-to-back pins. He then pinned Vanderwal in 1:11 in a rematch for third place. That gave Carlton a true second match against Evan Stoks of Canby, but Stoks recorded a fall in 5:26 to finish second. Carlton took third place.
Five other Cobras each finished in third place, but due to losses to the runner-up earlier in the tournament were prevented from wrestling back for true second. Eighth-grader Kade Sammons took third at 113 with an 8-2 win over Caleb Greenman of Canby, but lost in the semifinals to runner-up Brant Buysse of Minneota. Sophomore Zach Spinks won 3-1 in overtime over Blake Reiss of Minneota for third, but Spinks lost in the semifinals to runner-up Jose Nelson-Cuellar of St. James.
At 138, senior Evan Wiens closed his career with a fall in 3:11 over Emerson Winter of Pipestone. Wiens lost to runner-up Austin DeVlaeminck of Minneota in the semifinals. At 145, senior Yanick Tade won a 10-2 major decision over Tallin Johnson of St. James to place third, but Tade lost to runner-up Cole VanOverbeke in the semifinals. And at 182, senior Jacob Suess recorded a pin in 1:24 over Steven Czech of Pipestone to place third. Suess lost to runner-up Jordan Osborne of Madelia-Truman-Martin Luther in the semifinals.
Sophomore Jesse Jepsen (160) finished with a fifth-place medal for the Cobras. Sophomore Hunter Ekstrom (120) and freshman Eli Mutz (220) each finished sixth.
Six Bobcats advance Wabasso-Red Rock Central will have six competitors moving on to St. Paul after the Section 3AA Individual Tournament, held Friday and Saturday in Redwood Falls.
WRRC had one section champion and five section runners-up.
Earning gold for the Bobcats was senior Devan Liebl, who won the 195-pound class. Liebl claimed a 4-2 overtime win over Brandon Kempema of Worthington in the finals.
Senior Tyson Doubler captured runner-up honors at 138. Doubler lost 3-0 to Hunter Ranweiler of New Ulm in the finals.
Sophomore Jared Schroepfer finished second at 145. Schroepfer lost 7-4 to Toby Semler of Marshall in the finals, but defeated Mario Maldonado of Fairmont-Martin County West to win true second.
Junior Nick Altermatt took second at 170, dropping a 9-7 overtime decision to Solomon Nielsen of Luverne in the finals.
Senior Mitchell Fulton placed second at 182. Fulton lost 5-2 to Vince Riley of Worthington in the finals, but defeated Austin Schmitt of United 5-2 to win true second.
At 285, senior Jared Welch rallied from a semifinal loss to eventual champion Mason Hutt of United, winning a wrestleback, then beating Nic Putnam of Worthington 5-1 for third place. Welch then claimed an 11-2 win over Ethan Beckler of Quad County to win true second.
Claiming fourth-place finishes for the Bobcats were eighth-grader Mason Irlbeck (106), senior Cody Dudgeon at 152 and senior Cole Werner at 160.
