Bobcats' Schroepfer wins gold
One champ, one runner-up for Bobcats Wabasso-Red Rock Central had had two wrestlers competing for state championships Saturday at the Class A State Tournament, held at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
One of those, senior Alex Schroepfer, capped an undefeated season by winning the state title in the 285-pound weight class.
Schroepfer pinned his way through the first three rounds, pinning Mike Schively of Wabasha-Kellogg in 32 seconds, pinning Garrett Malstrom of Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted in 2:16 and pinning Martin Granados in 51 seconds to advance the the finals. There, Schroepfer claimed a 9-5 victory over Taylor Carlson of United North Central to win the state title. The championship win was just the second time all year Schroepfer did not win by either pin or forfeit.
At 120 pounds, Bobcat senior Spencer Jenniges advanced to the state finals for the second straight year. Jenniges opened with an 8-1 win over Conrad Kondos of Breckenridge, then claimed a 6-0 win over Brandon Sullivan of Pierz. In the semifinals, Jenniges won a 5-3 decision over Miguel Ambriz of Long Prairie-Grey Eagle. But in the finals, Jenniges ran into Cameron Sykora of Border West, who won his fourth straight state title with a 15-0 technical fall victory. It marked the second year in a row Sykora had defeated Jenniges in the finals.
At 170 pounds, junior Jordan Schroepfer went 0-2 at the tournament, falling 6-1 in the opener to Ryan Stottler of Minnewaska. Schroepfer then lost 3-1 to Sam Swanson of Trinity School.
At 220 pounds, freshman Jared Welch was pinned in 5:48 by Tyler Olson of Maple River in the first round. Welch was eliminated when Olson lost a 4OT decision in the second round.
Two Cobras earn medals The Windom-Mt. Lake wrestling team came home with a pair of medalists from the Class A State Tournament, held over the weekend at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
Senior Vince Johnson claimed state runner-up honors at 195 pounds. Johnson opened Friday with an 8-3 decision win over Tristan Palmer of United North Central. In the second round, Johnson defeated Jake Denn of Madelia-Truman 7-3.
In the semifinals, Johnson scored a takedown late in the match to claim a 4-3 victory over Hunter Fick of West Central Area/Ashby/Evansville. But in the championship match, three-time state champion Nathan Rose of Sibley East ended Johnson's run with an 11-3 major decision.
The Cobras' other medalist was junior Jared Willaby, who finished in third place at 132 pounds. Willaby started the tournament with a 10-3 win over Kyle Michalek of Blackduck-Cass Lake-Bena. Willaby then claimed a 7-2 decision over Levi Marsh of Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial.
In the semifinals, Willaby gave up a late takedown to fall 3-1 to eventual state champion Quinten Berres of Kimball. Willaby regrouped in the consolation semifinals with a 4-0 win over Ted Androll of Kenyon-Wanamingo. In the third-place match, Willaby won a 2-1 4OT thriller over Cody Weiland of Crookston.
The Cobras' other two entrants were eliminated after first-round losses on Friday. At 113 pounds, junior Wyatt Stevens dropped a 3-2 decision to Dillion Kubiatowicz of New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva. Kubiatowicz lost his second-round match, eliminating Stevens.
At 120, junior Joe Fischenich lost by fall in 5:34 to Ryan Killeen of Spectrum. Fischenich was eliminated when Killeen lost in the second round to eventual state champion Cameron Sykora of Border West.
