11/8/2013 8:45:00 AM Firearms deer opener is Saturday
The Minnesota firearms deer hunting season begins Saturday morning in Minnesota.
The season will run a continuous nine days, through Nov. 17.
Hunters are reminded that their deer must be registered within 48 hours of harvest. Registration can be done online, via telephone or in person at a big game registration station. The only remaining big game registration station in Cottonwood County is Expressway in Westbrook.
Hunters are also reminded that they must wear at least 50% blaze orange above the waist, including the head and torso areas.
Locally, the number of antlerless deer permits is up slightly over past years, as the local deer population has stabilized after the harsh winter conditions seen a couple of years ago. Hunters wanting an either-sex permit had to submit for a lottery back in September. Standard buck-only licenses can still be purchased at any license distribution center.
