6/7/2013 8:17:00 AM Eagle baseball blanks Springfield, heads to State
Springfield 000 000 0 = 0-2-1 Windom 001 000 x = 1-2-0 The Windom Eagle baseball team advanced to the State Tournament for the first time since 1987 Thursday after defeating Springfield 1-0 in the Section 3A championship game, played at Marshall.
The Eagles scored the game's only run in the bottom of the third inning. Sam Huska was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. After not successfully bunting the runner to second, Jacob Johnson was also hit by a pitch.
Following a strikeout, Andy Pfeffer delivered a base hit to right field. The Tiger right fielder bobbled the ball in the outfield, allowing Huska to race home from second base with an unearned run.
That proved to be all the support Eagle starter Collin Lovell would need in the game. Lovell allowed two hits and worked around a pair of walks, as the Tigers did not advance a runner past first base in the game. Springfield had a leadoff hit in the third inning, but the runner was thrown out attempting to steal second by Eagle catcher Danny Kneeland.
The Eagle defense was sharp throughout the game, with shortstop Brandon Thongvivong and second baseman Andy Pfeffer handling a combined seven groundouts in the game.
In the top of the seventh, Lovell coaxed a foul pop-up, with first baseman Travis Janssen making a running over-the-shoulder catch for the out. Pfeffer handled a grounder for the second out, and a chopper to Janssen at first base ended the game, sending the Eagles into a celebration behind the mound.
Devin Nielsen had the other Eagle hit in the game.
Lovell allowed two hits and two walks while striking out nine to record his second consecutive shutout of the postseason. For the playoffs, Eagle starting pitchers allowed only a single run.
Windom advances to the Class A State Tournament, which begins Thursday at the Mini Met in Jordan. Pairings will be determined Saturday morning. The top five teams in the field are seeded and placed into a standard bracket, with the three non-seeded teams placed into the bracket via a random draw.
