RRC/WWG 000 000 = 0-0-7 Windom 110 008 = 10-6-1 The Windom Eagle baseball team opened its season in near-perfect fashion Friday, coming within one hitter of a combined perfect game in a 10-0 victory over Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove.
Pitchers Collin Lovell and Zach Bartosh combined for the six-inning no-hitter. Lovell fanned five batters in two innings of work. Bartosh worked the final four innings to pick up the win, striking out four.
Windom got on the board in the bottom of the first when Andy Pfeffer walked, stole second and third and scored when Brandon Thongvivong reached on an error.
In the second, Sam Huska reached on a one-out walk, moved to second on an error, took third on a walk by Danny Kneeland and scored when Thongvivong beat out an infield single.
RRC/WWG got its only baserunner of the game in the top of the sixth, when Andy Merrick reached base on an error.
In the bottom of the sixth, Devin Nielsen led off with a walk. Andy Pfeffer moved Nielsen up with a sacrifice bunt. Danny Kneeland followed with an RBI single. Kneeland moved to third on an errant pickoff attempt and scored on a single by Thongvivong. Thongvivong moved up on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Lovell. Travis Janssen then reached on a dropped fly ball. Zach Bartosh drove in a run on a grounder, but a late throw allowed all the runners to stay safe.
The Eagles then drew back-to-back bases-loaded walks by Bryton Syverson and Huska before Nielsen ended the game via the 10-run rule on a two-run double to left-center by Nielsen.
Thongvivong had two hits and three RBI in the win for the Eagles. Nielsen had two RBI.
Bartosh took the pitching win, working the final four innings of no-hit ball. He didn't walk a batter and struck out four.
Brady Bierl took the loss for the Falcons, working the first five innings. He allowed two runs on two hits, walked four and struck out five.
Windom 003 133 1 = 11-8-2 MCC 000 051 2 = 8-8-5 The Windom Eagle baseball team improved to 2-0 on the young season Saturday afternoon, claiming an 11-8 victory over Murray County Central at Slayton.
Windom got on the board first, scoring three times in the third inning on a pair of Rebel errors and a sacrifice fly by Collin Lovell.
Sam Huska added an RBI sacrifice fly in the fourth, giving Windom a 4-0 lead. The Eagles pushed the lead to 7-0 in the top of the fifth, scoring on a pair of wild pitches and on a bases-loaded walk to Bryton Syverson.
But MCC answered in the bottom of the fifth, scoring five times on five hits against Eagle reliever Danny Kneeland. The big hit of the inning was a two-run triple by Seth Bass.
Windom pushed the lead to 10-5 in the top of the sixth, scoring on an RBI double by Brandon Thongvivong, a wild pitch and a balk.
MCC scored a single run in the sixth. Windom regained a five-run lead in the seventh when Sam Huska singled and scored on an errant pickoff attempt. MCC plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but a strikeout ended the threat.
Andy Pfeffer and Devin Nielsen each had two hits in the win for the Eagles.
Lovell earned the pitching win, working three innings of no-hit ball. He struck out seven Rebel hitters. Thongvivong worked the final 2-1/3 innings to earn a save.
