Wolverines rout Tigers, are one win from State

Springfield 26-18 = 44
MLA 33-37 = 70

Mt. Lake Area used a 14-0 run in the first half to take control of the game and used a 12-0 run in the second half to put the game away Monday night, claiming the Section 2A South championship with a 70-44 victory over Springfield at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter.

The Wolverines' first-half run was sparked by a pair of buckets each by Carter Kirk and Josiah Stoesz and slashing baskets by Cody Klassen and Josh Grev. That gave the Wolverines a 28-16 advantage. Springfield battled back with a 6-0 run to end the half, with MLA taking a 33-26 lead into halftime.

MLA slowly began to pull away early in the second half as Kirk scored a pair of buckets. A driving layup by Zach Dickens gave MLA a 14-point lead. The Wolverines then put the game away when Klassen and Andrew Hempeck hit three-pointers, Stoesz and Kirk added putbacks and Klassen scored on the fast break.

Kirk netted 29 points, grabbed 14 rebounds, had eight assists and seven blocked shots. In the process, Kirk passed Mark DeYounge to become the all-time leading scorer at Mt. Lake Public School with 1,606 points.

Stoesz added 14 points and nine rebounds in the win. Klassen had eight points. Hempeck finished with seven points and eight assists.

MLA will play Friday at 6 p.m. at MSU-Mankato for the Section 2A title against north sub-section champion Lester Prairie-Winsted Holy Trinity. The third-seeded Bulldogs upset top-seeded Sleepy Eye St. Mary's 80-73 to win the north sub-section title Monday night.

Next games: Check for updates after each game.
MLA: vs. LPHT (at MSU-Mankato), March 15
