Wabasso-Red Rock Central had four state medalist wrestlers at the Class A State Tournament, held Friday and Saturday at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
The top finisher for the Bobcats came at 113 pounds, where Spencer Jenniges came home as the state runner-up. Jenniges opened the tournament with a 7-3 decision over Wyatt Becker of Badger-Greenbush-Middle River. Jenniges then won a 9-1 major decision over Joey Majerus of Zumbrota-Mazeppa.
In the semifinals, Jenniges won a 2-1 overtime decision over Blane Tschida of Kimball. But in the finals, Jenniges ran into top-ranked Cameron Sykora of Border West and wound up losing by a 16-1 technical fall to finish as the state runner-up.
At 145, Tanner Rohlik opened by pinning Royal Crow of West Central Area in 4:36. Rohlik then defeated Trevor Scott of Holdingford 10-4 to advance to the semifinals.
In the semifinals, Rohlik lost a 3-0 decision to Paden Moore of JCC. Rohlik then won a 5-1 decision over Shane Siewert of Lake City, then claimed a 7-3 decision over Trevor Scott of Holdingford to finish in third place.
At 132, T.J. Fulton opened with a 10-1 major decision over Chris Cox of Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted. Fulton then won a 9-4 decision over top-ranked Gus McCarthy of Border West to advance to the semifinals.
Fulton lost in the semifinals on a 15-5 major decision to Eliot Jurries of Jackson County Central. In the wrestlebacks, Fulton defeated Austin Brockhoff of Sibley East 4-3, but was pinned by Dylan Herman of United South Central in 2:29 to finish fourth in the state.
At 285, Alex Schroepfer opened by pinning Victor Torres of St. James in 1:22, but Schroepfer lost his second-round match 4-2 to Jarrod Grunklee of Blooming Prairie.
In the wrestlebacks, Schroepfer pinned Allen Huju of Deer River in 0:27. He then pinned Curtis Brisk of Pierz in 1:46. But Kelsey Bocek of Minneapolis Patrick Henry pinned Schroepfer in 3:50, dropping Schroepfer to the fifth-place match. There, Schroepfer claimed fifth place by pinning Nick Langer of Kenyon-Wanamingo in 4:09.
At 182, Jordan Schroepfer saw his tournament come to an early end. Schroepfer lost a 5-1 decision to Kody VanDenEykel of Frazee, then was eliminated when VanDenEykel lost in the second round.
The Windom-Mt. Lake wrestling team finished with three medalists over the weekend at the Class A State Tournament, held at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
Action started Friday with one Cobra advancing all the way to the semifinals, automatically earning a spot on the medal stand. That was Joe Fischenich at 113 pounds, who defeated Trenton Coyer of Osakis 5-3 in overtime, then topped Byron Byer of Frazee 2-1 to advance to the semifinals.
One Cobra lost in the first round. Wyatt Stevens dropped a 2-1 decision at 106 to Seth Elwood of Medford. But Stevens was able to come back through the wrestlebacks when Elwood won his second-round bout to move to the semifinals.
At 126, Jared Willaby defeated Sam Waln of Wadena-Deer Creek 8-3 in the first round, but lost 7-3 to Tyler Keller of Medford in the second round. And at 182, Vince Johnson pinned Shaheem Dukes of Minneapolis Patrick Henry in 2:57 in the first round, but lost a 3-2 decision to Colten Carlson of United South Central in the second round.
In Saturday's semifinals, Fischenich lost a technical fall in 3:10 to eventual state champion Cameron Sykora of Border West, dropping to the wrestlebacks.
Stevens won an 8-1 decision over Tanner Reetz of Frazee, then pinned Jared Goldsmith of Chatfield in 2:05 to earn a spot in the medal round.
Willaby won an 8-3 decision over Brett Nelson of Crosby-Ironton, then won a 5-1 overtime decision over A.J. Riley of Chatfield to earn a spot in the medal round.
Johnson won a 13-2 major decision over Noah Pesola of New York Mills, but then lost 9-2 to Porter Secrist of Wabasha-Kellogg, ending one win shy of a spot in the medal round.
Stevens won a 3-0 decision over Jared Clawiter of Kenyon-Wanamingo to advance to the third-place match at 106. He then lost a 7-6 decision to Brendon Coyer of Osakis to finish in fourth place.
Fischenich lost a 4-0 decision to Joey Majerus of Zumbrota-Mazeppa to drop to the fifth-place match. But Fischenich won a 7-4 decision over Zack Kuhns of Maple River to finish in fifth place.
Willaby lost a 3-1 overtime decision to Kyle Drehel of Goodhue to fall to the fifth-place match. There, he lost a 4-3 overtime decision to Jason Meyer of Sibley East, finishing in sixth place.
