Windom Area 0-2-3-1 = 6 Worthington 1-4-0-0 = 5 The Windom Area boys hockey team dug out of a three-goal hole in the third period Tuesday night to force overtime, then netted the game-winning goal in the extra period to claim a 6-5 win at Worthington.
The Eagles held a 2-1 lead early in the second period on goals by Zach Bartosh and Travis Janssen, but Worthington scored four consecutive goals to close the period, including two on the power play to take a 5-2 lead.
In the third, the Eagles battled back. Andrew Hirsch scored 42 seconds into the period, then Janssen pulled the Eagles to within a goal with his second of the game. Worthington was whistled for a five-minute major penalty with 3:25 left in the game, giving the Eagles a lengthy power play. With under a minute to play, the Eagles pulled goalie Tyler McGowan for a six-on-four skating advantage and netted the equalizer when Devin Nielsen put the puck past Trojan goalie Rylan Scholtes.
Then, in the overtime, the Eagles got the first break of the the period when Janssen skated into the clear with a shot. Bartosh redirected the puck into the net for the game-winner 2:41 into the extra period.
Windom outshot Worthington 47-34 in the game. McGowan finished with 29 saves.
