Windom Area 0-0-3-1 = 4 Mankato East 0-1-2-0 = 3 For the second straight game to start the season, the Windom Area boys hockey team had to work overtime Saturday. And for the second straight game, it was the Eagles providing the extra-time heroics.
Ryan Clark's second goal of the game at the 5:04 mark in overtime lifted the Eagles to a 4-3 win over Mankato East at All-Seasons Arena in Mankato.
Mankato East snapped a scoreless tie at the 10:27 mark of the second period but Windom got its offense going to start the third.
Travis Janssen netted an unassisted goal 15 seconds into the third period. Clark then netted his first goal of the season 1:42 into the third, giving the Eagles a 2-1 lead.
East rallied to tie the game at 2-2 before Janssen put the Eagles ahead off an assist by Zach Bartosh at the 9:13 mark of the third.
With time running out in regulation, East pulled its goalie for an extra skater and capitalized when the Eagles were called for icing while shooting at the empty net. Shane Sellner's goal with 29 seconds left on the clock tied the game at 3-3 and sent it to overtime.
In the overtime period, a battle in front of the East net resulted with Clark flipping the game winner over the Cougar goalie's shoulder from point-blank range, giving the Eagles their second straight overtime win to start the season.
Windom outshot East 31-22 in the game. Eagle goalie Tyler McGowan picked up the win, finishing with 19 saves.
