Citizens look to address rising local poverty level, impact on future workforce

As the Windom area poverty rate climbs at a growing pace and the opportunity gap also widens, how will the local workforce look in 10 years and beyond?

That concern (research shows 52 percent of Windom children under age 5 live in poverty) bubbled to the surface at last night's "Grow Our Own" meeting at the Windom Community Center. Sixteen people were on hand for the town hall style meeting.

People discussed possible local efforts that could help offer a more level playing field and also do a better job of uniting residents of all walks of life.

A citywide block party night and a free 24-hour daycare center are just two of the many ideas that came up at the meeting. At this point, none of these ideas are officially moving forward, but organizers are hopeful that small groups, or organizations will step up to help address the situation.
