Jeffers woman learns cancer knows no age

Glorida Redman was 83 years old the first time she learned she had breast cancer. And while those are words she had never hoped to hear, especially at her age, she approached the diagnosis in much the same way she approaches all aspects of her life - with a positive attitude.

In May, four years after her diagnosis, that positive attitude paid off. She was declared cancer-free.

However, just a week ago, she learned the raised, white-crusted spot on her leg, about the size of a quarter, is squamous cell carcinoma, or skin cancer.

But, again, while the news is difficult to hear, she's approaching the recent diagnosis in the same manner - positively.

"It's only because of the Lord," says the 87-year-old Redman of Jeffers, one of three individuals serving as this year's honorary chairpersons for Cottonwood County's Relay For Life. "He's given me quite a bit of peace. He's my Savior.

"It's quite an honor to be chosen as an honorary chairperson for Relay For Life. They have done so much for me. I received a hand-shaped pillow and after my breast surgery, I used it to lay on. Oh, what comfort."

For much more on Gloria's cancer story, see the article on the County Front on page 3 of the July 12 issue of the Cottonwood County Citizen, on newsstands today.
