County commissioners consider wheelage tax hike
Should Cottonwood County commissioners increase the current wheelage tax from $10 per vehicle, to $20.
That issue was discussed and tabled at a recent commissioners meeting. Currently, the tax is paid on new vehicles and at the time of license tab renewal. It covers virtually any vehicle with an engine, except motorcycles, motorized bicycles and mopeds.
County Auditor/Treasurer Jan Johnson said the tax raised $132,000 in 2015, so if the tax is doubled it would raise about $264,000.
