Winfair Backpack Buddy program underway

In an effort to give students and families a little extra boost, Winfair School recently rolled out its new Backpack Buddy food program.

"The Backpack Buddy Program is a collaboration between Winfair Elementary and several Windom community partners providing students living in food insecure homes support by providing weekend meals each Friday," Winfair Principal Wayland Denny said recently. "Each backpack will provide the equivalent of four weekend meals plus snacks."

The idea is to ensure more students are energized and ready to learn when they return to school on Monday. Denny reported that 52 percent of Winfair's students rely on the school's free and reduced lunch meals.

The Backpack Buddy food program was made possible with these contributions: American Lutheran Church ($2,500 grant), The Good Samaritan Society ($3,000 grant), Remick Foundation ($2,500 grant), and Hy-Vee (provides bags and 10 percent off cost of groceries).
