NYWA tournament draws thousands
Wrestlers and fans from Southern Minnesota packed the Windom Area High School gymnasium, Saturday, for a major youth wrestling tournament.
It is called a "regional qualifier." The top four wrestlers from each weight bracket move on to the Northland Youth Wrestling Association State Tournament held next month in Rochester.
The Windom-Mt. Lake Cobra Wrestling Club and Windom Lions Club jointly operate the tournament with support from the Windom Convention and Visitor's Bureau. The event runs in shifts, with the K-3 wrestling in the morning and grades 4-8 competing in the afternoon.
Organizers say that through the course of the day, at least 2,000 wrestlers and fans were at the gym. It is among the Windom's largest events, drawing families from as far away as Canby, Minneota, Granite Falls and Albert Lea.
