Windom gives robotics test run

The next time you hear about a high school robotics competition, pay a little closer attention. You may be hearing about the Windom Eagles robotics team.

Indeed, for the first time ever, WAHS has a robotics team. Yes, a team that builds robots - or more accurately, a robot.

In November, Bob Ruby, the school's new industrial arts instructor, formed a team of 10 students to compete in the VEX Robotics program. It is one of three different robotics programs available.

VEX is a smaller, lower-cost option for robotics teams. It requires teams to build an 18 cubic-inch robot from a kit supplied by VEX and use it to compete in tournaments during the year.

The 10 students on the team are seniors Ryan Helmoski, Nolan Jones and Nicholas Wolter, juniors Isaac Steele and Derek Kelsheimer, sophomore Ismar Mendoza, freshmen Ethan Clerc, Nathan White and Jackson Oltmans and seventh-grader Liam Kelly.

On Saturday, the Windom team competed in the first of three tournaments in which it will take part this year. The team took second among eight schools in the Riverland Tournament in Albert Lea.

"This is a first tournament, so it's sort of a practice tournament to see how you're doing," Ruby said. "But I thought our guys did an excellent job. Every component they designed for the robot functioned as it was supposed to."

For much more on the team, see the story in the Feb. 13 issue of the Cottonwood County Citizen on newsstands tomorrow.
